What Causes COVID Brain Fog?

One of the most mysterious side effects of COVID is so-called “brain fog,” also known as dysexecutive syndrome. This is a condition of confusion and even delirium — one that, in the case of COVID, can linger on after an otherwise successful recovery in the form of persistent cognitive sluggishness. For this episode we spoke with Dr. David Nauen, a neuropathologist at John Hopkins, who helped lead a study looking into the origins of COVID brain fog. Dr. Nauen believes he and his colleagues may have found an unusual answer: the never-before-recorded presence of a unusual cell type within the blood vessels of the brain.
