Can a cheap drug help beat COVID? It’s an intriguing question, especially given the high price of a number of non-vaccine therapies. We spoke for this episode with Dr. Sumit Chanda, director of the immunity and pathogenesis program and the infectious and inflammatory diseases center at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. Dr. Chanda has been working on the applicability of an already-existent medication — clofazimine, a treatment for leprosy — as a possible COVID therapy; we talked with him about the drug, his research, and what a cheap, widely available, easily administered treatment might mean for the fight against the pandemic.
